Why Do My Competitors Show Up on Google and I Don't?

It's maddening to watch a competitor show up above you on Google Maps when you know your work is better. Here's the thing: Google doesn't know whose work is better. It ranks based on signals — and your competitors are sending stronger signals than you are. The good news is that every signal is something you can match and beat.

The first reason competitors outrank you is profile completeness. They've filled in every field — services, service areas, hours, attributes, description, photos — and you haven't. An incomplete profile tells Google you're less serious, and it takes five minutes to start fixing.

The second is reviews. If your competitor has forty reviews at 4.8 and you have six at 5.0, Google ranks them higher because the volume of data is more reliable. Reviews are one of the strongest ranking factors, right after your primary category. The fix isn't complicated: ask every happy customer for a review the day you finish the job, by text, using your direct review link.

The third is their website. Google checks that the site tied to a business profile confirms what the profile says — same name, same phone, same services, same city. If your competitor has a matching website and you have nothing, or a site that doesn't match, Google trusts their listing more. A matching website is the difference between showing up and being invisible.

The fourth is activity. Competitors who post to their profile, add fresh photos, respond to reviews, and seed their own Q&A signal to Google that they're active and relevant. A profile that hasn't been touched in six months slowly slides down. You can beat competitors by doing all of this — and doing it better and more consistently than they do.

That's exactly what we do as a Tampa SEO company. We audit where you stand, rebuild your profile, connect a matching website, set up a review system, and do the ongoing work that moves you past your competitors on the map.
