If you're spending money on Google Ads and the phone isn't ringing, you're not alone — it's one of the most common complaints we hear from Tampa business owners. Google Ads can be incredibly effective for local businesses, but only when they're set up correctly. Here are the five reasons your ads aren't working, and what to fix.
First, broad match keywords are wasting your budget. Google's default matching is generous — sometimes too generous. If you bid on "plumber Tampa" with broad match, you might show up for "plumber salary Tampa" or "plumbing school Tampa." Those clicks cost you money and bring zero customers. The fix is exact match and phrase match for high-intent keywords only.
Second, you have no negative keywords. Negative keywords tell Google what to exclude — "jobs," "careers," "DIY," "how to," "free." Without them, you're paying for clicks from people who will never hire you. Adding a solid negative keyword list can cut your wasted spend dramatically.
Third, your targeting is wrong. If you're a service business in Tampa, you don't need your ads showing in Orlando. Tighten your geographic targeting to the areas you actually serve. Fourth, you have no conversion tracking. Without it, you're flying blind — you have no idea which keywords bring calls and which waste money. Set up call tracking and form tracking from day one.
Fifth, your landing page is weak. Even if your ads are perfect, if someone clicks and lands on a slow, confusing page with no clear way to call you, they leave. Your landing page needs to load fast, state your offer clearly, and have a click-to-call button visible immediately. Most DIY ad campaigns send clicks to a homepage that wasn't designed to convert.
Every one of these is fixable, and fixing them usually transforms a campaign from a money pit into a lead machine. That's what we do through our Google Ads management service — tight keyword targeting, negative keyword filtering, conversion tracking, and landing pages built to turn clicks into calls.
