The Complete Google Business Profile Checklist for Tampa Businesses

If you run a local business in Tampa — whether you're a trade, a service, or a professional practice — your Google Business Profile is the single biggest thing deciding whether new customers find you. Most Tampa businesses leave it half-finished and lose jobs to competitors who don't. This is the exact checklist we use to get Tampa businesses climbing the map. Work through it top to bottom; each item is worth doing.

01

Claim and verify your profile

  • Go to business.google.com and claim your business (or create it if it doesn't exist).
  • Choose "Service business" if you travel to customers, and hide your address if you work from home.
  • Complete Google's verification (usually a mailed postcard). You are not visible until verified.
02

Nail your categories (most important ranking factor)

  • Set the most accurate PRIMARY category — this matters more than anything else on your profile.
  • Add 2 to 4 relevant SECONDARY categories. Every category is another search you can appear for.
  • Never add unrelated categories — it confuses Google and hurts you.
03

Fill out EVERYTHING (completeness is a ranking factor)

  • Write a full description using all 750 characters. Lead with what you do and where, benefit-first, no keyword stuffing.
  • List at least 20 services. It's a free text box — be thorough.
  • Set your service areas (the Tampa Bay cities you actually serve).
  • Add your real opening date, hours, and every attribute that applies.
04

Photos (listings with photos get about 35% more clicks)

  • Upload at least 20 real, custom photos — no stock (Google removes stock).
  • Show finished jobs, work in progress, your equipment, your team, and your truck.
  • Cover photo works best at 1024x576; logo at 720x720.
05

Reviews (your second-biggest ranking and trust factor)

  • Ask every happy customer for a review right after the job, by text (texts get read far more than emails).
  • Use your direct review link so it takes them one tap.
  • Respond to every review, good or bad. Stay calm and professional on negative ones — future customers are reading.
  • Aim for a 4.7 to 4.8 star average. A perfect 5.0 can look fake; a few honest reviews build trust.
06

Keep it active

  • Post to your profile regularly (offers, finished jobs, seasonal tips). Google rewards active profiles.
  • Add fresh photos every month.
  • Seed your own Q&A: post and answer the top 3 to 5 questions customers actually ask.
07

Connect it to a website that matches

  • Your website should match your profile exactly: same business name, same phone number, same city.
  • Put your city in your homepage title and headline.
  • Embed your Google map and show your reviews on your site.
  • A profile plus a matching website beats a profile alone every time.

That's the whole checklist. Done right, it's the difference between showing up first and being invisible. If you'd rather have it handled for you — profile optimization plus a website built to match — that's exactly what we do for Tampa businesses.
