Should I Build My Own Website or Hire Someone?

DIY website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy are cheap — sometimes free to start — and for a brand-new business with zero budget, they're better than nothing. But they come with trade-offs that most Tampa business owners don't see until they've spent twenty hours on a site that still doesn't rank and still doesn't bring in calls.

The first trade-off is time. Building a website yourself means learning a platform, choosing templates, writing copy, sizing images, and troubleshooting layout issues. If you're running a business, that's time taken from actual paying work. The second is design quality. Template builders give you something that looks okay, but okay doesn't build trust the way a custom site does. Customers can tell the difference, even if they can't articulate why.

The third trade-off is the one that hurts most: SEO. DIY builders are notoriously bad at the technical fundamentals that help you rank on Google — page speed, clean code, structured data, mobile optimization. You can build a beautiful site on Wix and it still won't show up on Google Maps because the underlying structure is working against you. Google also checks that your website matches your Google Business Profile, and a generic builder site rarely does that well.

The sweet spot for most local businesses is hiring a designer who builds custom sites at an affordable rate — not a $5,000 agency build, but not a DIY template either. You get a site that's fast, mobile-ready, built to rank, and designed to turn visitors into calls. And you get your time back to run your business.

That's what we do at George Creates. We build custom one-page sites for Tampa businesses at a flat rate, and we start with a free mockup so you see exactly what you're getting before you pay anything.
